Theodicy Blues So much suffering in this world Still you claim a loving god Too much suffering in this world Still you claim a loving god You say he's watching over you Chances are He never was. Children dying every day But he keeps you safe at night Thousands dying every day But he keeps you safe at night You say he loves the little children Well I say that just ain't right You say he hears your prayers Safely in your happy home You say he hears your prayers Safely in your happy home What about those who really need him Starving, sick, and all alone You praise him for the good times Never blame him for the bad You thank him when you're happy Blame the devil when you're sad I say you're living in a dream About a friend you never had Two hands reaching out Beat a million clasped in prayer Helping hands reaching out Beat a million clasped in prayer Prayers just echo off the ceiling No one listening. No one there! So much suffering in this world Still you claim a loving god Too much suffering in this world Still you claim a loving god You say he's watching over you Chances are He never was.

Off The Tracks I'm so weary with your wishful thinking, Circular logic, and your top down reasoning. It all comes down to - what you want to believe. Not a single truth - that you can prove to me. How many times you gonna keep coming back Your train of thought is runnin' right off the tracks! A history of trouble, a history of pain. Choking out the truth, in favor of a game. Burning down discovery, imprisoning great minds. Fighting back all progress - it should have been a crime. How many times you gonna keep coming back Your train of thought is runnin' right off the tracks! Just an ancient book, that you call your friend. A dirty double cross, you won't ever win! Leading you on, telling you tall tales Swing it like the hammer, it's bending like the nail! How many times you gonna keep coming back Your train of thought is runnin' right off the tracks!

Good Without god I'm a nice guy, most the time And I always try to be fair. I'm not perfect, I never claimed to be. There are times you'd swear I don't care. Like anybody, I have regrets And things no one would applaud But I can be good, fair, and moral Without your god. I try to be friendly and helpful If you're in need, I will lend a hand. I might not wear it on my sleeve But I'll be glad to call you my friend I try to be honest, and when it matters, I would never want to be a fraud. I can be good, fair and moral Without your god. (Bridge) Everyone is skeptical of all those crazy gods, But the one you were raised with Never has to play the same odds If you'll be fair, and honest If you'd put it to the test If you will use the same standards You apply to all of the rest You will see no valid reason To give your myth the nod You would be good, fair and moral Without your god. Bridge Repeat

WHY? 04:32
Why? It don't always matter what you get paid. It's how you spend your money. It don't matter much 'bout your I.Q. It's what you choose to study. It don't matter what you were taught, If they taught you lies. When you find that to be the case, I can sympathize! (Chorus) Why would you want this to be true? Do you really want somebody knowing everything you think and do? It will leave your reason black and blue. Why would you want this to be true? It don't matter what you believe. It matters if it's true. It don't matter what you say. It's about what you can prove. (Chorus) Why would you want this to be true? Do you really want sky daddy watching everything you think and do? It will leave your reason black and blue. Why would you want this to be true? (Bridge) If you'll take a honest look To the origens of your book You will find that what you thought You never really knew It don't matter 'bout the skeevy preacher Suited up and slick Offering you the same old lies The carrot or the stick (Chorus)

Don't Lie To Me Hey there brother, Don't Lie To Me Hey there sister, Don't Lie To Me If you can't show it, then you don't know it! Don't lie to me! Withholding the truth is just like telling a lie Hiding the proof? Now I see why! All the hollow promises No god ever keeps. If you can't show it, then you don't know it! Don't lie to me! You're practiced in the art of diverting attention Quote chapter and verse but avoid hard questions But if I still don't see, There must be something wrong with me. If you can't show it, then you don't know it! Don't lie to me! Hey there brother, Dont Lie To Me Hey there sister, Don't Lie To Me If you can't show it, then you don't know it! Don't lie to me! Repeat it enough, you'll start believing it's true No matter the source, as long as it works for you It's just your chosen myth Tall tales and stories If you can't show it, then you don't know it! Don't lie to me! Hey there brother, Dont Lie To Me Hey there sister, No No No No, Don't Lie To Me If you can't show it, then you don't know it! Don't lie to me! So many paths, but only yours is right? Are you kidding me? We could argue all night! What can you deliver That I should receive? If you can't show it, you don't know it! You better show it, or you don't know it! Put up and show it, or you don't know it! Don't lie to me.

Herd Mentality Would you write a blank check not knowing the price? Would you buy a used car without taking a drive? Would you bet your life without knowing the odds? Did you check the facts before you chose your god? (Chorus) So, you believe what you're preaching about Forgive me for my reasonable doubts You safely join the majority It's just the herd mentality Do you do everything the way your Daddy did? Do you think before you pass it on to your kids? Are you betting their life before you know the odds? Are you checking the facts before you choose their god? All your friends say they know it's true. Are they trapped in the herd mentality too? I only ask that you find some proof Before you take your god into the voting booth!
7.
It Serves You Right (Chorus) I know what you were taught, and I know it's not fair. I know what you're holding back(sneaking round) And hiding behind your prayers. It's the proof, the cold hard truth, that you'd rather not share. The garden never was, and no talking snake. No Adam or Eve. No magic fruit to take. If this never happened, what sin are we born into? No sacrifice needed. No evil to undo! Someday you'll choke on your blowing smoke And it serves you right. (Chorus) There never was a flood over all the earth There never was a tower, Babble is all it's worth! No evidence of Moses, no hard hearted Pharaoh. No tablets of commandments, no walls of Jericho Someday you'll choke on your blowing smoke And it serves you right. All these contradictions, and false attributions. Then the plagiarisms, forgeries, and additions. And how about the time line, no eye witness accounts. No reports outside your book, what's that all about? You're gonna choke on your blowing smoke And it serves you right. (Chorus, End)

Love the Believer, Hate the Belief It breaks my heart to see indoctrinated youth. The fables of the past handed down as truth. They're brought up to believe the church can be trusted. I'm telling you right now, that belief needs adjusting. Superstition is a lie. Dogma is a thief. I try to love the Believer, but I hate the belief! Well the truth can be elusive, and a bitter pill. And setting the record straight can take an act of will. But why would you want to believe it, if it isn't real? A lie is still a lie no matter how good it feels! Supernatural: not a thing. So I'll keep this brief. I might love the Believer, but I hate the belief! I've heard the preacher say “Love the Sinner, Hate the Sin.” Well don't do me any favors. I got lots of heathen friends! I see buildings everywhere with a cross and a steeple. Where they pass the plate a around taking tithe from the people. So the worker's worth his wages, tells you what you want to hear. While the hungry still go hungry regardless of their prayers. Superstition is a lie. Dogma is a thief. I try to love the Believer, but I hate the belief!

Nothing Fails Like Prayer When it comes right down to it, nothing fails like prayer When it comes right down to it, nothing fails like prayer Might as well talk to yourself 'Cause there's no god out there. No prayer is answered, no better than pure chance No prayers are answered, its only happenstance Count the hits don't mind the misses Then pretend you got a plan Your denomination won't help your situation Your denomination won't help your situation Its all just make believe Just a human fabrication If you pray for rain you know the rain is gonna come Or the flood to drain away your god's will be done When a real miracle is needed You don't even ask for one When the Dr. makes you well, Oh the lord be praised You say your god is so good, act like you're amazed But when the baby dies from cancer You say she's in a better place. When it comes down to it, nothing fails like prayer When it comes down to it, nothing fails like prayer Might as well talk to yourself 'Cause there's no god out there.

Ready to Believe I'll surely bow before your deity If you can show me some proof No more vague apologies But I'll accept honest truth But you'll stand by with the 90 and 9 You'll say I'm out here in the cold No kindly shepherd come to rescue me Or bring me back into the fold I stand ready to believe anything that is true. But before you try to convince me, Tell me what persuaded you? Most just believe with no questions Their heads are in the clouds Ill founded dreams of a better place Sell short the life we have right now Sorry if I'm raining on your parade But no one ever should rely On silly fables from an ancient time. Reason cuts the “ties that bind”. I stand ready to believe anything that is true. But before you try to convince me, Tell me what persuaded you? I bought the lies, even lied to myself Only to learn I'd been deceived Now I've turned from my credulous ways Logic and Reason set me free! We must reassess priorities Find new ways to play this game Only one life, we've got to make it count We only have ourselves to blame We only live on through our legacy Hollow threats can't bring us down All religions sell eternity We're here to ask “On what grounds?” We stand ready to believe anything that is true. But before you try to make us see, Tell us what persuaded you! We stand ready to believe anything that is true. But before you try to make us see, Tell us what persuaded you!

about

I was introduced to the Christian faith in private schools that I attended in the 3-6 grades. Though my family wasn't devout and we seldom attended church through my youth, I had Bible study classes as part of the curriculum, and we had "chapel" at least once a week. I started playing guitar around this time, and the hymn "I'll Fly Away" was one of the first songs I could play.

I don't blame my parents for putting me in these schools. They were just trying to give me the best possible education available at this time and place where the public schools left a lot to be desired. They weren't (and aren't) particularly religious, and though the schools gave me knowledge of the stories in the Bible, I don't feel that there was any pressure or attempt to make me a Christian.

At the age of 13 my family moved, which ended my early exposure to religion except for what was inherent in living in the South Eastern United States. I finished grade school, got married, and spent a single hitch in the military. Towards the end of my time in the service my son was born, so we moved back home, rather than signing up for a second term, and the likelihood of a remote assignment on the other side of the world.

I got a good job in the same career field for which I was trained in the military, and continued to persue my music in what spare time I could find. The music business is and was a crap shoot, and though I might have been good enough to have made it a career, the breaks never came. This was frustrating for me, but my love of music never waned.

Through the coincidence of geography I was introduced to a pastor who invited me to participate in music at church, and I accepted. After about 2 years, the music director at the time resigned so I filled in as interim. After about a month, I was hired into the part time position of music director. I stayed in that position for about 10 years. During that time I read the Bible at least 3 times, attended Bible studies, helped in planning church services, and only missed 1 or 2 services due to work or sickness. I prayed, I studied, and I believed. I new what was in the Bible, and I believed it to the extent (I'm embarrassed to say) that it colored my politcal views about .... well ..... everything.

When the pastor that had brought me on was moved to a different church, and an even more liberal and very untalented preacher was brought in as a replacement, I decided not to stay and to try to find a place more in line with what I thought I knew as the truth of scripture. I started at another church, and within a few weeks, I was back on stage for every service.

It was during this time that I decided that I was going to commit to the faith to a higher extent than before. I was pondering taking a run at a Masters of Divinity, but as a precurser I thought I would do some study on my own to see if it was something I would enjoy. It was around 2009 when I did some searching online and found 3 courses of lectures by Bart Ehrman put out in audio format by The Teaching Company. They were "The New Testament", "History of the Bible – The Making of the New Testament Canon", and "The Historical Jesus". After about 2 weeks of listening to these back to back to back, I was flabergasted, and more than a little bit pissed. I didn't just take these at face value. I fact checked and sought out refutations. All I found was Christian theologions bending over backwards trying to square the circle and make their illogical conclusions seem logical enough to justify their imature need for an afterlife.

The denomination that I had been a part of is one of the best educated. You don't get to be a lead pastor if you are not credentialed. When I found out the truth about the history of Christianity, and the problems with the Bible, knowing that in a dozen plus years I had heard nothing but certainty and bravado from the pulpit, well lets just say that good old Bart had started the snow ball rolling down hill.

I had trusted the church as an oasis of truth, and even inspired others to believe the same. Then I find that not only are the very tenets of the faith built on dubious content, but those soliciting our trust and tithes are withholding information that they themselves have been taught. When the credulous look at the gospels as if they support each other as independant attestations, the clergy just smile and knod. They teach children about the The Garden of Eden and the murderous flood as if its all happy time with animals, and are pleased for them to believe that it actually happened. It's like a con game propping up a shady business, and the con is most effective and purposefully targeted on the children.

In the 5 years since this difficult realization, I have studied everything I can get my hands on to educate myself about what I feel is one of the most important and life altering pursuits we humans face. I read or listened to apologetics and counter apologetics, and I have yet to find an argument for any of the proposed religions that doesn't amount to special pleading. I have empathy for those that are entrapt in religion for reasons (and potential consequences) that could be catastrophic to their very lives. I am forced to maintain anonymity for fear that if my atheism were common knowledge, my work, my income, and the incomes of those who share the same place of employment could be adversely affected.

I had to do something though. I had to find some outlet, some way to actively rail against the dishonesty. The songs in this project are the result. The wonderful content, and intellectual offerings of my brothers and sisters in the atheist movement have inspired most of this, and have already inspired ideas for more songs that I hope to release in the future. Thanks to all of you, and if you have any ideas for lyrics, or if you are a musician that would like to collaborate, please don't hesitate to contact me.

If you are on the other side of these arguments, and feel that you can provide a serious rebuttal to any of the arguments portrayed in these songs, I would really like to hear from you too. I was once where you are, and seeking the truth is what brought me to atheism. I will follow what is most likely true wherever it leads me. I can't say that I'll worship when I get there, but I will concede to truth.
